The Honest Truth About Ecommerce: I’ve Seen It All

I’m Tired of Fake Ecommerce Gurus

Look, I’ve been around the block. I started my first online store in 1999, back when dial-up was still a thing. I’ve seen the dot-com boom, the bust, and everything in between. And honestly? I’m tired of these so-called “experts” who act like they’ve got all the answers. So, let’s talk about ecommerce like real people.

I remember sitting in a conference in Austin back in 2005, listening to some guy named Marcus (let’s call him Marcus, because I can’t remember his real name) drone on about “synergistic paradigms.” I turned to my friend, Dave, and said, “Dave, if I hear ‘synergy’ one more time, I’m gonna throw up.” And I meant it.

Why Most Ecommerce Advice is Garbage

Here’s the thing: most advice out there is completley useless. It’s either too generic or too complex. You know what I mean? It’s like trying to learn how to ride a bike by reading a 500-page manual. Just start pedaling, already!

I was talking to a friend last Tuesday, and she was telling me about this “guru” who told her she needed to “leverage her unique value proposition” or something like that. I said, “Look, just sell something people want. That’s it.” She laughed and said, “You make it sound so simple.” And it is, mostly.

But there are some things you gotta watch out for. Like, don’t fall for the “if you build it, they will come” nonsense. Newsflash: they won’t. You gotta put in the work. And not just any work—smart work.

My Biggest Ecommerce Fail

Okay, so I’m not perfect. Far from it. Remember that store I mentioned earlier? The one from 1999? Yeah, I screwed that up royaly. I thought I could sell anything online. So, I started selling, I don’t know, custom-made birdhouses or something. I mean, who buys birdhouses online? Not enough people, that’s who.

I lost a bunch of money. Like, a lot. I’m talking about three months of rent gone. But here’s the thing: I learned. I learned that you gotta find a market first, then sell to them. Not the other way around.

And that’s what most people get wrong. They think they can just slap up a website and watch the money roll in. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work like that. You gotta do your research. You gotta find out what people want. And then you gotta give it to them.

How to Actually Succeed in Ecommerce

So, what should you do? Well, first off, find a niche. Something you’re passionate about. Something you know a lot about. Because if you’re not passionate, you’re gonna quit when things get tough. And they will get tough.

I remember talking to a colleague named Dave about this. He was all like, “But what if I don’t know anything about anything?” I said, “Dave, you’re a human being. You know stuff. Figure out what it is and sell it.” He looked at me like I was crazy, but he did it. And now he’s killing it.

Next, you gotta build a website. And no, it doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to work. I’ve seen stores with the ugliest websites make a killing because they provide value. So, don’t sweat the small stuff. Just get it up and running.

And for the love of all that’s holy, don’t forget about marketing. You can have the best product in the world, but if nobody knows about it, you’re gonna fail. So, get out there and tell people about it. Use social media. Use email. Use whatever you can to get the word out.

Helpful Resources Online Guide

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But how do I do all this?” Well, there are plenty of helpful resources online guide out there to help you figure it out. Just don’t expect them to do the work for you. You gotta put in the effort.

I remember when I first started, I was completley overwhelmed. There was so much information out there, and I didn’t know where to start. But I figured it out. And so can you.

Why I Still Love Ecommerce

Despite all the crap, I still love ecommerce. I love the freedom. I love the creativity. I love the fact that I can work from anywhere, anytime. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

And you know what? It’s not just about the money. It’s about the people. It’s about the connections you make. It’s about the lives you change. And that’s something you can’t put a price tag on.

So, if you’re thinking about starting an online store, do it. Just don’t expect it to be easy. And don’t listen to the guru’s. Listen to people like me. People who’ve been there, done that, and have the scars to prove it.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what matters. Not the fancy talk, not the flashy websites. Just good old-fashioned hard work and determination.

And maybe a little bit of luck. But who’s counting?
